Forget flashcards: we’re learning Twi outdoors

Visiting Shai Hills Resource Reserve is a wonderful opportunity to practice Twi in a natural and memorable way. Language learning becomes easier when you connect words to real experiences, and nature provides the perfect classroom. Instead of sitting indoors memorizing vocabulary lists, we will explore landscapes, observe animals, and practice Twi through conversation and shared discovery.

One of the biggest challenges in language learning is remembering new words. However, when you see, hear, and use words in real life, they become much easier to recall. At Shai Hills, we will practice Twi vocabulary connected to nature, animals and travel while experiencing them firsthand.

As we walk through the reserve, participants will learn common Twi words for elements of nature. For example, we may practice words related to trees, rocks, rivers, grass, hills, and the sky. Seeing these things around us helps create strong mental connections between the language and the environment. Instead of translating in your head, you begin associating the Twi word directly with the object itself.

The trip also gives us the chance to learn animal-related vocabulary in an exciting setting. Shai Hills is known for its wildlife, including baboons, antelopes, birds, and reptiles. Imagine spotting a monkey and immediately practicing its Twi name with the group. These moments make language learning interactive and fun rather than stressful or academic.

Nature also encourages curiosity, which is one of the best motivations for language learning. When people are excited, relaxed, and engaged, they tend to absorb language more easily. Hiking together, sharing snacks, taking photos, and laughing during the journey creates a positive atmosphere where communication happens naturally.

For many learners, traditional classroom methods can feel repetitive or intimidating. Outdoor language experiences offer something different. You do not need perfect grammar or advanced vocabulary to participate. Even learning a few new words during the trip can feel rewarding because they are connected to real memories and experiences.

By the end of the day at Shai Hills, you may not remember every single word we practice, but you will remember the feeling of using Twi while exploring nature with others. Those experiences build confidence and make future learning much easier.
