How the Twi&Surf Weekend started

The idea for the Twi&Surf Weekend didn’t start as a big travel concept. It actually began during our regular language meetings at Language Café Accra. At our Twi Café gatherings, people often stayed after the sessions to chat, practice more Twi, and share stories about traveling in Ghana. Again and again, we heard the same comment: “We should travel together sometime.”

That simple suggestion planted the seed. If people were already connecting through language learning, why not take that experience outside Accra? Traveling together would give participants the opportunity to practice Twi in real-life situations, discover new places, and build stronger friendships within the community. So we decided to make it happen.

One advantage we had was our network. Over the years, we had built relationships with many hotel owners and tourism partners across Ghana. That meant we already knew some great places that would be perfect for small group trips. With these connections, organizing our first language-focused weekend getaway became much easier.

Our first trip was a simple beach weekend to Kokrobite, just outside Accra. It was a small group, but it proved that the idea worked. Participants loved the chance to travel together, practice language skills informally, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the coast. The success of that first experience encouraged us to think bigger.

The second trip took us somewhere completely different: Banko in the Ashanti Region. This was our first official Twi Language Weekend, focused more strongly on cultural immersion and practicing Twi with local speakers. Being in a village environment allowed participants to hear the language everywhere. In markets, in conversations, and in everyday life. It showed us how powerful travel can be as a language learning tool.

After these first two trips, we started thinking about combining language learning with adventure activities. That’s how the Twi&Surf Weekend in Busua was born.

Busua, a small fishing and surfing town in Ghana’s Western Region, quickly became the perfect destination. The beach is beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s one of the best places in the country to learn how to surf. By combining Twi practice sessions with surfing lessons, we created a unique experience where participants could challenge themselves both in the water and with the language.

Since then, the Twi&Surf Weekend has grown into our most popular and most organized trip. Each edition has improved as we learned what participants enjoy most: a balance of structured activities and free time to relax, explore, and connect.

Today, we are preparing to bring our 15th group to Busua, which makes this trip a special milestone for us. What started as a simple idea at a language meeting has grown into an unforgettable travel experience that brings people together through language, culture, and adventure.

The upcoming Twi&Surf Weekend is also a special one because we will not only visit Busua… we will also make a stop in Cape Coast to visit the Castle and have lunch. Don’t miss it!
