Food on the road

One of the best parts of travel is sharing a meal. Gathering around the table, tasting something new, and discovering how food connects people. On our trips, we treat meals as a moment to slow down and enjoy each other’s company. Whether it’s a barbecue under the stars, a relaxed breakfast at the guesthouse, or all our own plate, food plays a big role in how we experience the places we visit.

We know that everyone eats differently, and that food preferences and allergies matter. That’s why we make sure our meals are inclusive, flexible, and thoughtfully planned. Before each trip, we ask you about any dietary needs (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, nut-free, or other requirements) so we can make sure there’s something good for everyone. We plan options in advance with our partners. For dinners where you can choose from a menu, you’ll get to see the options ahead of time, so you can decide what fits your taste and diet.

Our menus are a mix of Ghanaian and international dishes. We believe travel is about balance, tasting something new while still having familiar, comforting options. You might try jollof rice with grilled vegetables one night and enjoy pasta or a fresh salad the next. Breakfasts often include fruit, eggs, bread, and spreads, and we always make sure there’s something simple and nourishing to start the day.

Many of our meals are shared, which adds to the experience. We love the sense of community that comes from eating together, so we often organize a “meal of the day” where everyone gathers to share the same dish. On some trips, we do a communal barbecue. A relaxed, open-air dinner where travellers can sit together and chat about the day’s adventures. It’s casual, social, and always a highlight.

We also work closely with the hosts and cooks. We want our meals to reflect the regions we travel through, which means fresh ingredients, home-style recipes, and food that tells a story. At the same time, we know that after a full day of exploring, comfort and quality matter just as much as authenticity. So we keep our menus diverse. And sometimes you even get the chance to cook your own food.

On our Kumasi and Ashanti Weekend, food takes on an extra special meaning. We start the day with a healthy and diverse breakfast (think: tropical fruits, eggs, porridge, and fresh bread) perfect fuel for exploring. One evening we gather for a group barbecue, where travellers and hosts share grilled food and laughter in the garden. Lunch is at TUMI Hostel, where we enjoy fresh, homemade dishes while supporting the women’s project behind it.

For us, food is more than a necessity. It’s an invitation to sit together, to taste, and to belong. Wherever we go, we make sure every meal feels like a shared moment worth remembering.
