Twi Café this week’s theme: market day & numbers

If you’ve ever wanted to buy fruit, bargain at a stall, or simply greet a market seller with confidence, this is your week. Ghana’s markets are alive with rhythm and colour. Voices calling out prices, laughter, the smell of fresh produce, and the music of daily life. Knowing a few Twi words changes the experience completely.

Every Twi Café begins at 6:30 PM with a 30-minute warm-up to review (or learn for the first time) introductions and the Twi alphabet. If you’re a complete beginner, make sure to arrive on time. This part is made especially for you!

Then we move to the theme of the week. This week (24 October 2025) it’s “market day and numbers”.

We’ll start with numbers 1 to 10. Once you can count, you can shop, bargain, and understand prices like a pro. Expect plenty of call-and-response practice (and probably some funny mispronunciations, that’s part of the fun!). In daily life most people only use the numbers up to 5, and then count in English.

Then we’ll explore market rules & etiquette. The unwritten codes that make Ghana’s markets run smoothly:

These moments of etiquette are where language meets culture. Small gestures of respect that make every interaction warmer.

After that, we’ll dive into market vocabulary, from ɛmo (rice) and bayerɛ (yam) to ntoosi (tomato) and mɛko (pepper). We’ll role-play simple conversations between buyer and seller. You’ll learn how to ask for what you want, understand prices, and even negotiate politely (“Mepa wo kyɛw, te so”, please reduce the price!).

Do you want to practice Twi on a real market? We’re going to Kejetia Market in Kumasi by the end of this month. You can still join us

Why join Twi Café?

Because language makes life here richer. The moment you greet someone in Twi, faces light up. You’re not just speaking words, you’re joining in.

At Twi Café, we believe the best way to learn is by making mistakes in good company. You’ll hear real accents, share stories, and probably laugh at yourself once or twice. That’s exactly how it should be.

So whether you can already say “Mɛfa. Fa bayirɛ, brodieɛ, ɛne ntoosi  enum ɛne mɛko ka hɔ.” or you only know “Agoo!”, come join us. Bring your curiosity, your voice, and your sense of humour.

Twi speakers, we need you too! Come help, listen, and share the beauty of your language.

🕡 Friday 24 October 2025, from 18:30 – 20:30 (you can join us later!)
